Minister of Urban Development, Benarva Browne said the Government is moving full steam ahead with its urban transformation agenda.
Speaking at a recent media conference, Minister Browne said Phase Two of the port development is already underway, setting the stage for new shopping and dining hubs, and an expanded cruise ship terminal.
"I want to stress about the urban transformation that will be happening as a result of this port. This port is phase one, but phase two which we are well on the way, we are having discussion with CDB and funding has been arranged. Phase two will see the moving of the Grenadines Wharf and the Schooner Facilities further west of this facility, which will make way for what will become the modern Kingstown of the urban development. Let's call it an urban renaissance for what it is, where we can then make way for development such as hotels, cultural centers, shopping, eateries that are for both local and visitors alike. We would see the expansion of the Cruise ship Terminal which in itself has its challenges and deficiencies."
Minister Browne said the launch of MPOC is just one step in the government’s broader modernization and transformative vision for the country.
She noted that more updates will be provided in the coming months regarding the phasing out of existing facilities, future redevelopment plans, and what the public can expect from the next stages of the port transformation.
"I just want to stress once again that this development is just a step in the further modernization and transformative vision that this Government has been speaking about. The Argyle Airport as it opens skies, this port would open the seas. And we continue to stress the importance of this project and other developments towards the betterment of every Vincentian life throughout Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. You definitely be hearing more and more from us about how the transformation will go, the phasing out the Campden Park Facilities and the Kingstown Facilities, how the transfer will be happening, you would be hearing more details about the opening ceremony and how that will be featured and even the operations of what is to come from MPOC."
