Minister of Urban Development, Benarva Browne said the modern Port Project in Kingstown will become fully operational in October.

She made this statement while responding to a question in Parliament on Monday, 29th October, 2025.

Minister Browne said the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Port Authority have already commenced preparations to have the modern Port Project become operational since the keys were handed over earlier this month.

"Madame Speaker on the 16th of September the Prime Minister of this country was handed the keys or the Key Card to two buildings on the 16th of September.  So , therefore we have already taken possessions of two of the main buildings which have been satisfied, they met the conditions to be handed over.  And the reason why we did this was to allow the Port Authority to begin their preparation work and to start to settle Madame Speaker. This was in the view that once the port is handed over fully open on the 24th that it becomes operational on the 25th Madame Speaker."

Minister Browne also outlined what will be done to address the existing traffic flow to and from the new Port Kingstown.

"The existing traffic flow to and from the new port Kingstown will be revised to optimized the movement between the projected volumes and turning radii required for forty foot (40 ft) containers.  Within this scope of the work the contractor will undertake minor road improvements at the following junctions: Melville Street and Bay Street, Mc Coy Street and Bay Street, Higginson and Bay Street, Higginson Street and Grenville Street. The works will include service pavement repairs, manhole upgrades, drainage repairs. No corner widening works are expected to be executed under the Port Construction Contract as current turning radii have been adequate.  However, to facilitate large truck movements roadside parking along certain streets must be discontinue."
