Policy Planning and Administration
The Ministry of Urban Development, Energy, Airports, Seaports, Grenadines Affairs and Local Government was established in November 2020. The major component of the portfolio is a robust capital programme designed to modernize, develop the country and consequently transform the lives of the citizens.
Grenadines Administration
The Grenadines Administration (GA) is comprised to three (3) Revenue Officers situated on the island of Bequia, Canouan and Union Island. The organization has a staff of nineteen (19) members operating in the three (3) offices. The services offered by the Grenadines Affairs to the people of the Grenadines are disbursed through the three (3) offices where each office service is extended vary: the Union Island Office serves Union Island, Mayreau and Petit St. Vincent (PSV), Bequia Office services Bequia and Mustique and Canouan serves.
Energy Unit
The Energy Unit is tasked with promoting policies and programmes that will contribute towards reducing the country’s dependence on imported fuel through the promotion of sustainable energy and energy efficient technologies its residence only. The Energy Unit continues to manage an extensive portfolio of sustainable energy and energy efficiency projects, with a particular focus on Solar PV, both on the mainland and within the Grenadines.
Local Government
Background Local Government may be considered the domain of the government closest to the people with regards to the provision of basic services and community infrastructure that improve the quality of life of residents, particularly the poor. The Local Government Division is responsible for the promotion of local governance within the Communities and the provision of basic services such as construction and maintenance of community infrastructure (minor road, drains and footpaths development and maintenance); the management of cemeteries and community markets; and sanitation services (cleaning of public areas and disposal of garbage), upkeep of public spaces, management of local facilities (public bath and washing facilities, community markets, etc.) The local authorities also collect property taxes on behalf of Central Government; and participate in the management of other public facilities as required by Central Government. The following are the existing local authorities:
- District Councils: Biabou, Bequia, Lowmans, Park Hill, and Union Island
- Town Boards: Barrouallie, Calliaqua, Chateaubelair, Georgetown and Layou
- Village Councils: Marriaqua and Troumaca,
- Special Services: West St. George, North windward, North Leeward and Canouan
- Kingstown Town Board
The local authorities are appointed/selected and provided with subvention by Central Government to meet their operational cost and to provide service to the communities.
